Some people think of Catalina Island as a quick, romantic weekend escape from Los Angeles, and that it is. But there are many tours and activities – whether you want to walk, drive, cruise the bay or play golf or tennis – and now there’s the new zipline. So families can consider an activity-packed getaway to the island too. The “Unlimited Package” is perfect for families, couples or adventurous singles who can’t sit still.

Deal: Stay two nights at the newly refurbished Pavilion Hotel in Avalon, with rates starting at $267 per night, pretax ($581, including tax, for two nights midweek), and get access to 15 free activities on the island plus half off the Catalina Zipline Eco-Tour and Sea Trek Undersea Adventure. The free activities (with their usual charges in parentheses) include the following:

* Entry to the new Descanso Beach Club ($2 per person)
* Golf Gardens Miniature Golf Course ($8)
* New GPS Walking Tour ($20)
* New Behind the Scenes Casino Tour ($29.50)
* Undersea Tour ($41.75)
* Casino Walking Tour ($18.75)
* Skyline Drive Tour ($41.75)
* Avalon Scenic Tour ($18.75)
* Seal Rocks Cruise (August only, $19.25)
* Flying Fish Tour (late May – mid-September, $23.50)
* Glass Bottom Boat (June – September, $19.25)
* Sundown Isthmus Cruise (June – September, excluding dinner)
* Catalina Island Golf Course (green fees only, $49, for 18 holes)
* Movies at the Avalon Theatre ($8 )
* Tennis court rental ($15 p/hour)

The activities aren’t the only extras at the hotel, which will reopen May 14. Each stay comes with complimentary continental breakfast, afternoon wine tasting, free island shuttle service, free in-room Wi-Fi and more.

Tested: When I looked for weekend rates, the two-night package for two adults in a standard room came to $693, including tax, for May 21-23. You can definitely save some money by traveling on weekdays. The same room, midweek (June 8-10), cost $581, including tax, for a two-night stay with the package.  Rooms alone started at $200 per night midweek.  So by participating in activities for a few hours, two people could easily make up the difference between the room rate and the package rate.

When: Beginning May 14 and running through the summer season, based on availability.

About the new Zipline Eco-Tour: The zipline is 3,671 feet long, divided into five legs,  with a total elevation drop of 440 feet. You travel about 40 to 45 mph. It opens April 15. Cost: $89 per person.
