Lefties, rejoice. A chain of vacation properties is opening lefty-friendly rooms in a dozen cities and giving great rates on them too.

Deal: Shell Vacations Hospitality’s Happy April Fools’ Day deal celebrates the launch of its special lefty-friendly rooms, suites and studios at 14 locations. Introductory rates for the new rooms start at $49 per night pretax in Anaheim and San Antonio; rates under $100 are available in San Francisco, at Waikiki and Kona in Hawaii and other places.

Not only are door handles and light switches repositioned to the left, but refrigerators, coffee makers and other appliances have been redesigned for lefties. Bathrooms feature custom-made faucets with hot and cold features switched to keep lefties from accidentally scalding their hands.

“The growing population of left-handed people has long been ignored, ” said Karen Johnson, vice president of sales and marketing for Shell Vacations Hospitality. “Now, left-handed guests can enjoy accommodations to fit their every need … because at Shell Vacations, what is right is left.”

At Orange Tree Golf Resort in Scottsdale, Ariz., lefties can hit the links with left-handed golf clubs. At one of the Hawaiian properties, beachcomber lefties can try strumming left-handed ukuleles.

Dates: For stays from April 1 to May 31 for new bookings only. Reservations must be booked by April 5. Rates, blackout dates and stay restrictions vary by property. For example, most of April is blacked out for the Kona and Waikiki properties, and both require a minimum three-night stay.

Tested: I found good availability at all the properties, but I noticed that Starr Pass Golf Suites in Scottsdale, which offers the deal on a prepaid, nonrefundable basis, had more available dates in May than in April. I tested specific dates at two properties online with these results:

> Waikiki Marina Resort at the Ilikai in Hawaii – A junior lanai suite was available on May 1-4 for $94 per night pretax. On other dates in May, the pretax rate was $88 per night (May 8-11, 14-17 and 21-24);  Memorial Day weekend was not available.

> Crotched Mountain Resort in Francestown, N.H. (about 60 miles from Boston) – A one-bedroom suite was available for two adults and one child from April 22-24 and May 28-31 for $79 per night pretax.

Caveats: You’ll be staying at a time-share property. “Our rental guests may be invited to participate but are not required to sit through a timeshare presentation,”  Johnson said. ” In fact, several properties dont even have an on-site sales center.”

Cancellation policies vary by location. The Hawaiian destinations may require two weeks’ notice prior to arrival, but most of the others require 48 hours’ notice.
