Hong Kong: Discover the magic from $1,299 per person

Hong Kong: Discover the magic from $1,299 per person

This deal could lead you to a custom-tailored suit or a peaceful meditation at the Po Lin Monastery in Hong Kong.

Deal: Ritz Tours will help you discover “Hong Kong in a Week” from $1,299 per person pre-tax (with tax the total base price is $1,376).  Note, due to the Shanghai Expo from May to October, the base price only has slim availability, and you are likely to pay a $50-$100 surcharge for higher airfare.  The package is based on double occupancy and includes:

  • Round-trip airfare from Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO) and payment of the fuel surcharge;
  • Five nights’ accommodation at the Intercontinental Grand Stanford (price range is $160-$230 per night);
  • One half-day of sightseeing in air-conditioned motorcoaches to visit the open-air Stanley Market (famous for finely made silk garment bargains), the Aberdeen floating community (an important fishing port in Hong Kong), and Victoria Peak (one of Hong Kong’s highest mountains) ($50 value);
  • Full American breakfast during hotel stay;
  • Airport transfers by shuttle ($30 round-trip value); and
  • Services of tour guides.

On free days, travelers may want to visit the Po Lin Monastery, also known as the “Buddhist Kingdom in the South,” and the Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront, a pedestrian-only promenade that offers breathtaking views of the city skyline, but those sites aren’t included in the package.

 When: Through Dec. 31, 2010, subject to availability, rates are higher during peak periods such as spring break and summer.  The $1,299 per person rate is good from Aug. 16-Sept. 7, Nov. 15-Dec. 9.

Tested:  When I called the lowest airfare was not available all summer due to the Shanghai Expo. The land package was available during the summer if travelers wanted to pay $200 more per person for airfare. I found the deal available for departures between Sept. 2-7 for $1,476 (which includes a $100 surcharge for higher airfare). From Nov. 15-Dec. 9, there is good availability with a $50-$100 flight surcharge (i.e., costing $1,426-$1,476). The only departure dates currently with no surcharge were Nov. 18 and 25.

Caveat: A person handling reservations with Ritz Tours told me that the Intercontinental Grand Stanford is in a more central location, so I tested the deal for that location.  For travelers who would prefer to spend $100 less, the package is also offered at the Harbour Plaza Metropolis.  Payment in full is due within a week of booking, and there are penalties for cancellation.  Trip insurance including trip cancellation can be purchased for an additional fee of 7% of the cost of the total package (per Kelly Cho in Ritz’s marketing department).

 Contact: Ritz Tours, (800) 900-2446 or (626) 289-7777,  8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays-Fridays.  This deal can be booked only by phone; request the “Hong Kong in a Week” package with the code: HKWI.  (If you prefer the less expensive option of staying at the Harbor Plaza Metropolis, ask for code HKWM.)
