Rave Motion Pictures at Town Square in Las Vegas

The Vegas movie scene has been though a unique evolution. Back in the day, there was grown-up entertainment (e.g., the casinos, stage shows, high-end dining, etc.) and then there was family entertainment (e.g., movie theaters, bowling alleys, arcades, etc.). Locals rarely ventured to the strip for a good time and the hotel/casinos in the ‘burbs largely catered to the senior set looking for some hot action in the keno and bingo parlors.

And then the 90’s came. Vegas became a “family destination.” Casino operators thought it would be a great draw to build castles and volcanoes on the strip, attached an amusement park encased in pink glass to one casino, and wrapped a roller coaster around another. The local casinos started following suit, putting chicken fingers in the prime rib buffets. They installed bowling alleys alleys and arcades to keep teens occupied while mom and dad played video poker. The strip mall movie-plexes began to struggle in competition with casino-based theaters who could provide a one-stop entertainment experience for the whole family.

Soon, many local movie houses were shuttered and torn down for even more Vegas strip mall developments (because what Vegas really needed was another grocery store/bank/coffee house/nail salon/dry cleaner/token ethnic restaurant combo on a corner).

It seemed as though it was impossible to take the kids to a movie in Vegas without having to trot them by a smoky poker room.

And then came Rave.

Grab your popcorn and settle into a huge, comfy seat.

Anchoring the west side of the Town Square shopping complex, The Rave theater has become a haven to movie buffs who prefer to see their movies without the “charm” of coursing through a casino floor. With 18 screens including sizable IMAX and 3-D capability, you can find every wide-release flick out there and a few special screenings here and there as well.

All theaters are stadium style seating with an amazing 48 inches of leg room in between each row. This is great if you’re worried about your little movie goers kicking the seat in front of them. (Heck, they could probably somersault down the aisle without raising an eyebrow.) However, if you’re like me and like to use the row in front of you as an ottoman, you’re going to need some pretty long legs to pull it off. Oh well, at least the seats are amazingly comfortable and the armrests are extra wide.

The concession stand is standard issue and the staff is friendly. The facilities are always tidy and parking is ample, especially if you’re looking to combine your show with a meal and shopping.

For as nice as this theater is, the prices are competitive and consistent with other theaters around town (regardless of the attachment to a casino property). The location is very convenient for visitors who are looking for a break from the gaming life and for locals who seek a centralized place to meet up for a night out. when making your plans, keep in mind that Rave is like Southwest Airlines. Neither participate in aggregate search and booking mechanisms. You need to search directly and book directly with them to get your seat. So that’s why you won’t find Rave on sites like Fandango.

Going direct is worth it, for sure.

Get your tickets, grab your popcorn and settle into a huge, comfy seat. Enjoy the show.
