Good excuse to leave town for Memorial Day: Southwest Airlines air-hotel deals

Southwest Airlines has some travel packages for Memorial Day weekend if your plans are open and you have a hankering to leave town. Most of the lowest-priced round-trip airfares included in the packages return on Memorial Day morning – so you still have time to squeeze in a family picnic at home.

Here are a couple of examples. I researched these trips last week; your costs may vary by the package and booking date.

Los Angeles to Scottsdale, Ariz.: This Southwest package features a stay at the luxury Fairmont Scottsdale, rated Five Diamonds by AAA,  with a third night free. The all-inclusive price includes round-trip airfare, three nights at the hotel and a rental car for two.

I selected a 6:20 a.m. outbound flight (I love getting places super early; you can choose later flights, but it costs more) from Los Angeles (LAX) to Phoenix (PHX) on May 28 and a return flight at 9:05 a.m. on May 31, Memorial Day.

Total cost: $838.56, including some taxes and fees, and remember that’s the total for two people. The price dropped to $718.56 if you don’t rent a car. (The Fairmont doesn’t provide shuttle service from the airport, but it does have a free shuttle to nearby golf courses.)

To get this package, you must book no later than 4 p.m. PDT on May 20 and travel between May 27 and May 31.

Burbank to Las Vegas: Southwest also offers deals on a variety of hotel-casinos, with widely varying prices. I selected three nights at Treasure Island in a deluxe room (one king-size or two queen beds) and round-trip airfare for two.

The best price, I found, was if I took a 7 a.m. or 8:20 a.m. May 28 flight from Burbank (BUR) to Las Vegas (LAS)  and returned May 31 on a 7:20 a.m. flight.

Total cost for two with some taxes and fees was $873.67, though the hotel adds on a $20 resort fee each night. The same package cost $983.67 if you wanted to fly from Los Angeles.

To get this package, you must book by 4 p.m. May 6 and travel between May 27 and 31.

Fine print: Southwest Vacations packages don’t include $3.70 per takeoff and landing tax, airport taxes (which may be as high as $18 per person) or a $10  per person Sept. 11 security fee.
