Airlines add flights, waive fees after ash plume briefly shuts airports in Ireland, Scotland

Air service has resumed after another volcanic ash cloud from Iceland on Tuesday wafted over Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland, shutting airports for several hours and causing flight delays and cancellations. The shutdown occurred on the same day that European transportation ministers met in Brussels to discuss disruptions from Iceland’s spewing Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which shut airspace over Europe for six days in April and caused the cancellation of about 100,000 flights.

Aer Lingus and Ryanair were among the airlines that canceled flights.

On its website, Ryanair told ticket holders that its flights resumed at 2 p.m. Tuesday local time and that no further delays were expected. The budget airline, whose affected flights traveled between Dublin and destinations in Europe, added seven flights Tuesday and eight Wednesday to make up for the canceled flights. You can rebook flights for free, either online or by calling the airline, the website said.

Aer Lingus said transatlantic flights are planned to operate as scheduled, except for Flight 105 from Dublin to New York, which was scheduled to leave at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday local time. Aer Lingus also allows passengers to rebook for free.

Meanwhile, the BBC reported that the EU transportation ministers agreed to measures that may mitigate the effects of travel disruption caused by by the volcanic cloud. These include speeding up the creation of a single European regulator for airspace over Europe and rules that would allow governments to compensate airlines for their losses due to the shutdown of airspace last month.
