Bar Milano Barcelona – Cocktails

I would be interested to know what Barcelona has more of: bars or bakeries? Surely someone, some city official, has this information. It seems as though each block has at least one bakery selling the basic baguettes, croissants and glazed doughnuts and that every corner has a bar, serving cerveza, the house wine, and carajillos (coffee with rum or other liquors).

Bars abound in Barcelona, but not all bars are created equal, no sir! There are many types of bar in the city, from local to posh, from dive bar to bohemian cool, from old-guy-playing-video-poker-bar to chic wine and tapas joints….and I am leaving a lot out here. Personally, I like my bars with a bit of live music and a lot of cocktail, but these bars are scarce in Barcelona’s vast sea of watering holes; one must know where to look.

Milano Cocktail Bar is one such hidden gem. I had lived here for two years, and had walked past Milano Bar hundreds of times before a friend took me there, sometimes it is amazing the things we just don’t see. I ended up going to Milano because Michelle Faber, a local jazz pianist, plays there every Tuesday, and she is a friend of mine. Of course I recommend Michelle’s show, but I also recommend Milano any night of the week. The bar has live jazz Monday through Sunday and there is no cover to get in.

Milano Bar is classic. The waiters wear suits, and bring you fancy cocktails which they set on little napkins. They also provide plentiful bar snacks, which I really appreciate (the small details go a long way in my book) . You can check out their line up of music here (in Spanish), but rest assured that it is always a good place to go for a pre-dinner drink. Music at Milano Bar begins early by Spain standards, at about 8:30pm. Drinks are spendy, but you are not paying a cover, so it all works out.
