Fees are rising, service can be lousy and … airline passengers are happier? Um, yes, according to the latest North America Airline Satisfaction Study, released Tuesday by the respected research company J.D. Power & Associates.

The company, based in Westlake Village, asked more than 12,300 passengers who flew between April 2009 and April this year to rate North American airlines on costs and fees; flight crew; in-flight services; aircraft; boarding/deplaning/baggage; check-in; and reservations.

Deal puts Cairo, the Pyramids and Petra at your feet

This deal makes the mysterious Middle East accessible and affordable for those who want to see Egypt and Jordan.

Deal: Friendly Planet Travel has discounted its eight-day Pyramids and Petra Tour for departures between September and December so a couple can save $600.

The tour includes: round-trip flights from New York (JFK) on Royal Jordanian Airlines, fuel surcharges, arrival and departure transfers and all intra-Egypt flights and ground transportation; six nights’ lodging at first-rate hotels; daily breakfast, one lunch and one dinner; and sightseeing tour programs with English-speaking tour guides of the Pyramids and the Sphinx in Giza, Egypt, and the lost city of Petra (including a horseback ride and a walk through Siq, a narrow gorge flanked by enormous cliffs) in Jordan.

Tested:  All dates were available when I tested,  but if travelers wish to add on the optional three-night Dead Sea Spa Extension at the Movenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea, the Nov. 27-Dec. 4 tour has the most availability.  The Dead Sea Spa extension costs $349 per person for these dates. Travelers must arrive in New York by the evening of their departure date (for an outbound flight departing JFK at 10:30 p.m.).  

Caveat:  Travel insurance is recommended and costs $129 per person for tours costing less than $5,000.  A non-refundable $300 per person is required to hold a reservation with payment in full due 75 days before departure. The $1,699 and $1,799 prices do not include $158 (for U.S. and foreign taxes/fees) or a $28 Egyptian visa fee per person.
