Gulangyu Island

Gulangyu Island

Gulangyu Island

Gulangyu Island is located just southwest of Xiamen City. Visitors can reach it by steamship from Xiamen City in about 5 minutes. Gulangyu Island is renowned for its delicate natural beauty, its ancient relics, and its varied architecture. The island is on China’s list of National Scenic Spots and also ranks at the top of the list of the ten most-scenic areas in Fujian Province.

During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the island was called ‘Yuanshazhou Island’. It got its present name from the huge reef surrounding it. When the tide comes in, the waves pound the reef and it sounds like the beating of a drum. The island came to be named ‘Gulang’. Gu in Chinese means ‘drum’, and Lang, ‘waves’.

During the later Ming Dynasty, the troops of national hero Zheng Chenggong were stationed here. After the Opium War in 1842, 13 countries including Great Britain, France and Japan established consulates, churches, and hospitals, turning the island into a common concession. In 1942, Japan occupied the island until the end of the War of Resistance against Japan.

Beach

Beach

Gulangyu Island has about 20,000 permanent residents, all of whom enjoy a comfortable, relaxing life. Only electric-powered vehicles are permitted on the island, so the environment is free from the noise and pollution of combustion engines. Breathing the clean air, appreciating the ever-present green trees and lovely flowers, anyone here can feel like they are in heaven. With classical and romantic European-style architecture, the island truly deserves to be called the’Architecture Museum’. It is also known as the ‘Cradle of Musicians’ and ‘Island of Music’ because of its reputation for music appreciation.

The Island Ring Road, which circles the island, allows you to fully enjoy all the sights of this small, charming island.

Among the many scenic spots on the island, the most attractive are Sunlight Rock and the Shuzhuang Garden.

Sunlight Rock

Sunlight Rock

Sunlight Rock

Located in the south-central part of the island, Sunlight Rock is the island’s highest point with an altitude of 92.7 meters (304 feet). Though it may not rank with high mountain peaks, it appears superb and grand when seen from afar. The name comes from a sun-shaped formation in the granite. When the sun rises, the morning light illuminates the granite in Sunlight Temple and the rocks are bathed with sunlight.

At the foot of Sunlight Rock stands the Memorial Hall of Zheng Chenggong, built in honor of the hero’s feats which include expelling the Dutch colonists and re-occupying Taiwan. Wandering up the steep rock path, visitors will see many profound inscriptions left by poets, the oldest of which dates back to over 400 years. This is the main cultural sight on the hill. Continuing on, you will see the preserved training grounds of Zheng Chenggong’s troops. Near the field is a huge rock bridging two cliffs, forming a natural entrance to a cave. This is called ‘Old Summer Cave’ (Gu Bishu Dong) where you can feel a pleasantly cool breeze. It’s the perfect viewing spot to appreciate the scenery of Gulangyu Island. A fantastic panorama of Xiamen City, including Nanputuo Temple, Xiamen University, and Hulishan Battery is within view.

Shuzhuang Garden

Shuzhuang Garden

Shuzhuang Garden

First built in 1931 on the southside of the island, Shuzhuang Garden was once a private villa. It became a garden park open to the public in 1955. It is divided into two parts-the Garden of Hiding the Sea (Canghaiyuan) and the Garden of Making-Up Hills (Bushanyuan). It was exquisitely designed to embody three important characteristics in gardening – hiding elements, borrowing from one’s surroundings, and combining movements.

The principle of hiding elements is embodied in the way the ocean remains hidden from view even if you walk right up to the garden gate. However, once you emerge from the bamboo forest, the seascape leaps into view. Climb the Tower of Tide-Viewing to really get a terrific look at the sea.

Borrowing from one’s surroundings refers to cleverly using naturally available scenery. Using the original slopes facing the sea, the reefs in the bay, and the shape of the shoreline, the former garden owner built bridges and pavilions at various levels. The panorama changes from a small bay to a vast ocean as you ascend. Here, visitors can taste the spray of the surging waves and get a bird’s-eye view of other charming islands. Both Sunlight Rock and Hero Hill (Yingxiongshan) are also visible.

Slope

Slope

The garden also possesses another characteristic – the combining of movements. Its unique arrangement joins a rockwork that includes a maze of connected caves with fine pavilions on the side of the slope. Lovely children chasing and gamboling among the caves represent movement and activity, while people resting in the pavilions give a feeling of tranquility and harmonious contemplation.

As a complex of Chinese traditional gardens, Shuzhuang Gardens entices visitors so much that one cannot help but want to see inside.

Gulangyu Island has other sights worth seeing including the Bright Moon Garden, the Seasight Watch Garden, Yu Park, and Xiamen Museum. The Bright Moon Garden is located in the southeast of the island with an area of over 20,000 square meters (23921 square yards). It is a statuary garden of national hero Zheng Chenggong with enchanting views. The appealing Seasight Watch Garden boasts villas of various styles of both China and the West. It has become a noted resort for visitors.

    Qiongtai Academy

    Qiongtai AcademyQiongtai Academy

Qiongtai Academy is located on Wenzhuang Road, in the Qiongshan District of Haikou City. It was initially built in 1705 in memory of Qiu Jun, a famous scholar from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The academy was named Qiongtai because Qiu Jun was called ‘Mr. Qiongtai’. At one time, the academy was the supreme institution of Qiongshan. It is now the site of the Qiongshan Teachers’ Training School.

The main building of the academy is the ‘Kuixing Lou Building’. ‘Kuixing’ was believed to be the god of examinations and the building was named after Kuixing to ‘help’ the students who trained here to win the imperial examinations. The building is a typical Chinese brick-and-wood structure architecture with two floors. Green tiles, red corridors, carved beams and painted rafters are splendidly set off by the green trees which surround the building.

    Qiongtai‑AcademyQiongtai‑Academy

The events behind the famous story Search the Academy occurred here. Sometime during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), a student of the academy fell in love with a maid of local governor. At that time, young people did not have the right to choose their husband or wife. So the governor was very angry after he found out about the relationship.

The maid escaped before he could punish her and ran into the academy for help. The governor wanted to search the academy, but the schoolmaster Xie Bao denied his request and sent the maid out of the city during the night. Finally, the maid and the student married. They lived happily together, and later the student succeeded in the imperial examinations.

However, the islands in Nanli Lake are so unique. There are 13 islands and five peninsulas in all. The shapes of the islands are varied, such as the square, oblong and round ones. Among them, the largest one covers 39,600 square meters (9.79 acres), while the smallest is 3,200 square meters (0.79 acres).

    Chao Lake

    ChaoZhou_West_Lake

    ChaoZhou_West_Lake

Chao Lake is located in the middle of Anhui Province and is one of the five largest fresh-water lakes in China. The lake is named for its resemblance to a bird’s nest. As the legend goes, the site of Chao Lake was once a city called Chaozhou. One day, an old lady named Jiao had a premonition that the city would soon sink. She informed people living in the city of this bad news and led them to safety. To commemorate this great old lady, the lake was also called Jiao Lake later on.

Covering an area of about 750 square kilometers (290 square miles), Chao Lake is a national key scenic spot. The lake is dotted with many tourist sites, such as Laoshan Island, Zhongmiao Temple, the three famous hot springs – Bantang, Tang Pool and Fragrant Spring, four national forest parks and five water-eroded caves.

Located at the center of Chao Lake, Laoshan (Mt. Lao) Island is the most renowned site. Many cultural sites are scattered on the island, such as Wenfeng Pagoda, Shengfei Temple, Nantang Port and some other pavilions. Built in 1631, Wenfeng Pagoda is an octagonal brick building with a height of about 50 meters (164 feet). On the walls of each storey are inscribed some epigraphs and poems. The pagoda also houses about 802 Buddhist figures and 25 horizontal boards.

    Chao Lake

    Chao Lake

Zhongmiao Temple is situated on the northern bank of Chao Lake. Reconstructed during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the temple consists of the front hall, the middle hall and the rear hall. Buddhist activities are mainly held in the middle hall. In the temple is enshrined the statue of Bi Xia Yuan Jun, a Taoist deity. At present, people go there mainly to appreciate the magnificent vista of Chao Lake instead of worshiping the god and praying for blessings.

Bantang, Tang Pool and Fragrant Spring are the three most celebrated hot springs around the lake. Bathing in the hot springs is good for your health. It can cure several kinds of diseases, for example, skin disease.

Chao Lake has abundant aquatic products such as silver fish, shrimps and crabs which are reputed as the ‘Three Treasures’. Paying a visit there, tourists can have a feast of the ‘Three Treasures’ while appreciating the appealing scenery.

    Guangzhou White Cloud Mountain

    White Cloud Mountain

    White Cloud Mountain

From ancient times, White Cloud Mountain has been one of the most famous spots of natural beauty in Guangzhou, and it’s still known as the First Spectacular Scene of Guangzhou. Every time the sun shines after the rain, and through late spring, a wreath of airy clouds circles the mountains. This is how White Cloud Mountain has won its name, and its reputation as a marvelous spectacle of nature. The fierce differentiation of rocks, and the different ways in which erosion has affected them, has caused White Cloud Mountain a crisscross network of gullies. So its relative height is now about 100 meters (109 yards). The quiet and secluded environment of the valley has made White Cloud Mountain a haven of peace from the big city.

People always describe the natural beauty of Guangzhou as being composed of white cloud and pearl sea, the white cloud referring to that of White Cloud Mountain, located about 17 kilometers (10 miles) north of Guangzhou. The total area of White Cloud Mountain is about 28 square kilometers (10 square miles), consisting of 30 peaks. Moxing Ridge (Star-Scraping Ridge), known as ‘the first peak under the southern sky’, is about 382 meters (417 yards) high. You can stand on the summit and look over the whole city and the beautiful Pearl River, the most famous river in Guangzhou.

    White Cloud Mountain Park

Yuntai Garden is an enormous garden filled with all kinds of blooms and trees, which make Guangzhou, City of Flowers, worthy of the name. The Sculpture Park is located in Fei’eling, and covers an area of 46 hectares (113 acres). It was built according to the fashion of the times, which was to use modern languages in sculpture. You will also find the biggest natural birdcage in China, perfect for enjoying all kinds of birds; Bird Spring Valley Park. Here you can stroll idly by the river and mountains, and mingle with the birds. Luhu Park is famous for Jinye Pond. The lake is so clear that the beautiful sights surrounding the lake are perfectly reflected in the water, like a brilliantly drawn picture.

It had very poor beginnings, being little more than a small hut, but Chisong was determined that it should become a revered shrine and through his persistence many local officials gave their support. In time the temple was to become the most important Buddhist temple in the area.

    Simatai Great Wall

    Simatai Great Wall

    Simatai Great Wall

Simatai Great Wal, which is well-known for its five characters of “steepness, compactness, queerness, wonderfulness, and comprehensiveness”, is located in Gubeikou Town to the north-east of Miyun, Beijing. Simatai Great wall is exquisite in its details and is grand as a whole, which is the only part of ancient Great Walls with the original features of Ming Dynasty well reserved.

Simatai Great Wall came into being under the famous general QI Jiguang’s supervision and his original creation, during the Wanli period. It incorporates various characteristics of Ten-Thousand-Mile Great Wall and at the same time bears its unique features. Professor LUO Zhewen, the prestigious Great Wall expert, praised “Chinese Great Walls are the best all around the world, while Simatai deserves the best among all Chinese Great Walls.” Up to now, Simatai Great Wall has been listed by UNESCO into the World Cultural Heritages.

Simatai Great Wall is separated into eastern and western parts by a valley, with a rainbow-like chain bridge over the valley. The hills in the west are sloping gently, with 20 watchtowers well remained. The jade kylin embossment on the General Tower is showing its originality and vividness. Simatai Great Wall is winding on the hills like a golden dragon with majestic vigor. The eastern part of Great Wall, with 15 watchtowers densely covering the peaks thousand meters high, looks even more fantastic.

On the marvelous Fairy Tower, there are white marble arches carved with lotuses, telling wonderful tales. The Heaven Bridge is following the Fairy Tower, which is shorter than 100 meters and narrower than 1 brick, and with cliffs along both sides. Those succeeding in passing the Bridge will be awarded Wall Heroes. On the very peak, connected with the Heaven Bridge, is Capital-Watching Tower, titled the Upmost Cultural Peak of Beijing, with a height of 986 meters above sea level. Walk up and enter the Tower, we may enjoy the white snow of Wuling Mountain to the east, the grand Great Wall to the west, the romance to the north, and capital lamplight to the south. All the outstanding sights will make us feel relaxed and happy.

Deep in the valley, there’re two springs called Mandarin Duck Springs. The east one is cold, while the west is warm. The two springs join into one lake, half cold and the other half warm. Traveling with a small boat on the lake, scanning widely, we may find the mysterious charm of the Great Wall. Simatai Great Wall is quite different with other parts of Great Wall in its fantastic sight seeing and precipitous topography, with interleaving fight walls and defense walls, sky bridge of all sizes, and the wording bricks with both Yinwen and Yangwen, etc.

Simatai Great Wall is included in many China Holidays itineraries – please contact us or visit our website www.BookChinaOnline.com for further details.
