Even for experienced travelers, planning the best itinerary for a trip to South America, with its land size of over 3% of the entire Earth’s surface, could prove more difficult than expected. This might just be the ideal time to find yourself an experienced tour operator. South America is home to some of the world’s most visited destinations such as the world’s highest waterfall, (Angel Falls) in Venezuela, the largest river and rainforest in the the Amazon, the Andes – longest mountain range, and even the driest place on earth, the Atacama Desert.
>From Caracus to Cape Horn, touring the bio-diverse continent of South America will take great planning skill, while also allowing enough time to see as much as possible while you are there. Why not make the trip even more enjoyable by making this adventure a group tour?
Gone are the days when the stereotyped group of senior citizens were packed in to a bus and then rigidly shuffled from place to place – seemingly prisoners of uninspired tour guides. Today’s group tours are arranged with the customer in mind and provide many advantages to and for individual travelers.
Any travel takes careful planning but for a tour of South America, with its numerous countries and borders and varied languages, could pose some travel “traumas.” A tour operator can provide you with a hassle-free taste of South America. Arrive at your destination – be met and taken to your hotel. Take a guided city tour followed by a day to yourself to explore or rest at your leisure. In South America, chances are you will want to visit many cities, requiring buses, ferries, and most likely more than one airport and more than one hotel. While you shouldn’t be run by the clock on your vacation, timing, locations, and confirmed reservations and tickets are essential.
Speak Spanish but not Portuguese? Not a problem with a group tour. Your guides speak the language, have detained knowledge of your destination, don’t get lost, and can also guide you to some of the finest restaurants and shops on your tour route. This “insider” information can really enhance your experience. All-inclusive packages also mean you have more than just a general idea of costs – before you go. Budget-breaking unknown costs happen less frequently when travel is expertly planned in advance.
Not only will you meet new people, but you’re traveling with others who chose the same destinations you have chosen. What better way to view Angel’s Falls than with a group of other people who truly appreciate the same experience? Relax and spend time on your own, but meet and compare notes at the end of the day. For single or shy travelers, a group tour is an excellent way of sharing travel experiences and sights in a comfortable and safe environment. Make new friendships that can last for years and find likeminded travelers who may want to plan future excursions with you.
South America tours are open to all travelers, and can be found for almost every possible energy level and destination. Peaceful and relaxing or jam-packed with activities, a South American group tour is waiting for you.
When you think of the great waterfalls in the world a couple undoubtedly come to mind; Victoria falls in Zimbabwe and Niagara Falls, straddling the American-Canadian border. But all good things come in three, right? And great waterfalls of the world are no exception to this, for this is no double act. Lurking deep in the jungle in South America on the Brazilian-Argentinean border lie the Iguazu Falls; higher than the Niagara Falls and wider than the Victoria falls, these falls are arguably the top dog in the field.
The name Iguazu comes from the Guarani or Tupi words y and ûasú, meaning ‘water’ and ‘big’, and with an average annual flow rate of 1,746 tonnes of water per second, it really lives up to its name. In fact the Iguazu falls have many apt names including a part of it known as the ‘Devil’s Throat’, where water pours in from three sides and mist can rise up from the bottom from anywhere between 30 to 150 metres. If your brave enough you can witness this from a suspended platform at the bottom that you can walk out onto. If you don’t have nerves of steel fear not, as there are many places to view the falls from, many of which are a lot less terrifying.
From the Brazilian side there is a long walkway which extends out into the canyon, from here you can find an extension that leads to the base of the Devil’s Throat. The Brazilian side is where you’ll want to be if you want to take to the air to see the falls, as it is the only place that does helicopter tours after Argentina banned them due to their environmental impact. A helicopter ride really offers you a sense of the scale of these falls and a chance to view the Iguazu Falls in a way many will not get to. However, it is understandable that to some, standing at the base of the Devil’s Throat with thousands of tonnes of water landing at you feet may seem less scary.
Over two-thirds of the Iguazu Falls are located in Argentina and as such it is of no surprise that it offers you the best options as to places to view the falls from. Access to the falls on the Argentinean side is aided by the Rainforest Ecological Train. This train transports up 120 visitors through the Argentinean rainforest in an environmentally-friendly way and brings visitors to the Devil’s Throat as well as the upper and lower trails. If you do not want to get the train there are many trails that you can take which bring you to various parts of the falls including the elongated stretch on the Argentinean side and to where you can catch the ferry to San martin island. One trail of note is the one-kilometre long Paseo Garganta del Diablo which brings you out right on top of the Devil’s throat.
There is much to do at the Iguazu Falls, a highlight of which includes the Mancuco Safari. On this trip you get taken for three kilometre jeep-pulled wagon ride through the jungle whereby you have a chance to see and learn about the native flora and fauna here. The second part of this trip involves a short walk through the jungle getting an even closer look into this remarkable eco-system. But this second part is merely to facilitate the third, as it is a walk to the docks where you board motorised rigid-inflatable boats that will take you into the mist of the falls where the water crashes down from above. Be under no illusion, you are going to get wet, but it is all worth it for this unique experience and anyway, this is Brazil and you can always bask in the sunshine of the southern hemisphere to dry off.
The Iguazu falls are undoubtedly one of the most impressive natural occurrences in our world and, to many, are considered to be one of the natural wonders of the world. If you are in Brazil and have the time to spare, it is definitely worth trying to fit a trip to them into your visit. Being by the border with Argentina and Paraguay also means that you can easily access these other countries and thus extend your South American trip further afield from Brazil.

In case you hadn’t realised, Brazil has a lot of beaches! Of course being such a big country and sharing much of its border with the coast, this is of no surprise. Lucky for Brazil and for those planning to travel there, is the fact that it lies on the equator, meaning not only does it have an abundance of beaches, but that these beaches are some of the best in the world! While undoubtedly having some of the best beaches in the world, being such a big country, one has to wonder; where are the best beaches in Brazil? Well two places that certainly prove to be popular destinations, for reasons that will become apparent, are Buzios and Itacare.
The Buzios peninsula lies approximately 110 miles North-East of Rio de Janeiro and is easily accessed by road. This place provides a haven for the ‘cariocas’ (The Brazilian term for a resident of Rio de Janeiro) and tourists seeking a bit of respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Touted as being even better then its made out to be on the posters that advertise it, it has proved a favoured hang-out of the famous, counting Mick Jagger and Brigitte Bardot as its fans. Having established itself as a highlight of Brazil, there are many hotels to chose from along with a huge array of activities including watersports, fishing and snorkelling as well as there being a nearby 18-hold golf course. You will find that the cosmopolitan influence of Rio has extended out here meaning not only can you get a wide selection of Brazilian cuisine, but that there are also many restaurants offering high quality Japanese, Thai, Moroccan and French food. Don’t let this give you the impression that you can’t find your slice of peaceful paradise in Buzios though, as with over 20 beaches making up this peninsula, you’ll find they all have there own personalities with many different things to discover and do on each.
Compared to Buzios, Itacare is perhaps more wild, rugged and untouched. Situated approximately 250 miles South of Salvador in Bahia state, you can expect to find a more deep-seated Afro-Brazilian culture here, devoid of the influence of a major cosmopolitan city like Rio. Afro-Brazilian party culture certainly exists here and you will hear live bands in bars lining the beach playing the traditional folk music, forró, into the early hours of the morning. As with Buzios, any visitor to Itacare can expect to find a wide range of activities here, particularly watersports. However, the thing that really sets Itacare apart from Buzios is its proximity to the Atlantic Amazon Rainforest, which means Itacare doesn’t just offer visitors the chance to get involved in classic beach activities but to partake in trekking, white-water rafting, canoeing and mountain-biking, amongst other things. Having the Atlantic Amazonian Rainforest on your doorstep also means that there are unprecedented chances to view some of Brazil’s wildlife in an area that is considered to be one of the most rich and diverse in the world in terms of plants and animals.
So if you want to escape from the city to somewhere that is good enough for the Hollywood elite then head to Buzios. But if it’s a wild Afro-Brazilian adventure you’re after then you’ll want to make Itacare a part of your Brazil holiday.

Copacabana and its beach are famous primarily by the inspiration that composers and writers absorbs from them. The neighborhood is without a doubt the most known and spoken in the planet. The beach, with its various events, is certainly desired by most visitors. The beauty and attractions, that both together have, make this place unforgettable.
Copacabana beach is not only about a beach. It represents a lot of Rio de Janeiro. Most of the activities that take place in Rio de Janeiro is held, or has the capacity to happen here.
Sports like beach soccer, beach volley, foot volley, surf, etc… are practiced all over the beach. The extension of the beach is about 4 Kilometers. You will find people jogging in the calcadao (big sidewalk) all day long. Some hot bodies will be exposed in this area. The most fit prefer to jog on the sand of the beach. People around here are cordial and nice. The area is safer than most places in Rio. You will find babies, children, teenagers, adults, and older people in its extension. You will also find a lot of love to give and receive. You can find many Brazilian stars as actors, soccer players, etc.
Accommodations around this area can be quite pricy. The best hotels of Rio are found here. The reason for that is because the main events of Rio occur here. New Years Eve, official beach sport events, concert shows, etc… Those were just to mention some of them. It is important to quote that the beach sport events for the Olympics will happen mostly in Copacabana beach.
You do not have to be in Copacabana to enjoy all the events. There are many different ways to get to and from Copacabana. Buses, subway, taxis are very common around Rio. Some precautions should be observed before using them. Buses and Subway are cheaper, but it can be dangerous, especially if you take too many things with you. You should limit what you bring, if any of these two transportations are chosen. A taxi is the most secure, but if you just take any taxi driver, you may get ripped off. The best thing is to get to know a driver that you can trust.
The average temperature in Rio throughout the year is 33 degrees Celsius. During the summer the temperature gets easily to 40 degrees. You will get pretty hot. The humidity is very high as well. You will feel like melting. Copacabana beach gets really crowded on weekends. I tell you that because you may not like to have too many people around you. If that is the case avoid it during weekends.
If you travel to Rio de Janeiro,, but never go to Copacabana beach, then your Rio travel was incomplete. I hope you will find everything you want there. Do not forget the solar skin protector, you will need it.

Ipanema Beach is considered the sexiest beach on the planet as of 2009. The fame precedes its beauty, and people who attend it. This fame started around the 60’s, when a revolution of music took place in the earth. The difference was that in the world, the revolution came with the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc… In Brazil, especially around Rio de Janeiro Area, the revolution came with Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Morais, etc…
These two, precisely, were from Rio, and knew Rio as nobody else. In fact they are called the most cariocas (people who are born in the city of Rio are called carioca) of all. These two, composed, and sung one of the most played songs in Rio, Brazil, and even in the world. The song was The Girl from Ipanema. This song was created in 1962, and first recorded in 1963.
The style for this song is called Bossa Nova. In my opinion, this style mixed with this song and some other songs Vinicius and Jobim composed, contributed tons to make Ipanema what it is today. If you have no idea what song this is, here is a one sentence summary.
It talks about a beautiful girl that would go to that beach everyday. The story is in fact true. The girl existed during that time, and is alive up to today, 2011. Of course, she is much older, but still beautiful. That song drove so many more beautiful girls to Ipanema Beach that today, they are thousands. If there are a lot of beautiful girls in one place, guess what happens? Yes, a lot of boys start showing up. Today they are also referred as the boys from Ipanema.
This was just one of the many stories this beach has to be told. Another interesting story has to do with Posto 9. What is Posto? Posto is like a stake. It divides the beach in many sectors. Posto 9 is very known because of the gay people. In fact, you will find the majority of the homosexual people there. There is an explanation though. A very known writer and politic called Fernando Gabeira had just returned to Brazil from a politial exile from France around the 80’s and on that occasion went to Posto 9 using an interesting thong. When questioned about it, he assumed that he was bisexual. This fact made that area between Posto 8 and 9 to be the homosexual place.
The best thing to do when you come to this beach is to take a walk on the calcadao (big sidewalk) and see what Posto fits the most to your personality. You will find a lot of sports as beach volley, surf, beach soccer. You will also find places just for chatting and dating. Going a little south you will find another beach that is more family type, and going north, you will find a more active environment.
It is all about your mind. How young your mind is. I hope you will have a great time in Ipanema Beach. Do not forget to bring skin protector. You will need it.

What do you look for New Years Eve? Have you ever heard of Copacabana New Years Eve party?
Let me tell you this. I hope you have heard of it, and had at least planned to be in its party one of these days. Why? Well, it is one of the most amazing things to be in this world. First, you have the chance to be in the most known neighborhood of the world (Copacabana). Second, you will have an amazing music concert, right after the new years just breaks up. Third, you will see a real firework party that last at least 20 minutes of real intense fire on heaven. It is incredible.
Copacabana is one of the most interesting places to be at anytime of the year, but it explodes during new years eve. Some important facts to know are that hotels during this time are packed. If you have the desire to participate in this party and be close by, you have to reserve the hotel at least two months before it happens. New years eve in Copacabana beach is very popular, and who participated once, wants to participate every year.
How did that all started? The Brazilian people are very superstitious since long ago. The mixture of race, religion, and nationalities made us this way. The African culture is also very influent, since Brazil also imported slaves before the nineteenth century. In terms of religion, many Brazilians follow Candonble. This religion has its roots in Africa, but it was mixed with other beliefs that Brazilians had. Today, I think this belief is very unique to the Brazilian people. Anyway, one of the things that the believers used to do on the 50’s were to, every 31st of December, go make an offer to Iemanjá.
Iemanjá is a goddess for this specific religion. The offers were made of flowers and any type of gifts thrown to the sea. The followers would dress in white and sing and dance for their goddess thanking her for the blessing of the year just passed, and asking for blessing in the New Year to come.
The beach at that time was not very crowded. A lot of respect was shown to the worshipers and their goddess. Once, around the 70’s, a hotel in Copacabana started to have some fireworks on the 31st. It is not known if they started the fireworks as a way to celebrate for Iemanjá or not, but most of the other businesses around that area started doing the same in subsequent years. The fireworks started to attract much more people, worshipers or not. The majority would dress in white as the worshipers did, and so a tradition was created.
During the 90’s, politics started to get involved. The commercial potential for this party was just too high. Big events started to take place. People from all over the world traveled to Rio de Janeiro on this date just to see the fireworks. In 94 Rod Stewart made a magnificent concert where more than 3,000,000 people were present. Nowadays, no other international star has participated on that event. However, the Brazilian’s singer stars are there to celebrate the New Year with huge concerts every year.
The number of people present is very contradictable based on information coming form many different places, but the Copacabana beach with an extension of about 4Kilometers is packed. So, we can estimate millions of people present every year.
If you do not like to be down there within the millions of people, but still want to see the party, you can and should see the party from your hotel room, if you are in Copacabana, or a close area. However, expects to put a good amount of money into it. Packages around this time of the year are very, very expensive.
You can have a great time, if you wish so, and start a New Year with a magnificent experience.

If you are coming from another country rather than Brazil, you will most likely not use this airport at all in Rio de Janeiro. However, if you travel inside Brazil, you could possibility go through it. This airport is International only because as of today it has one international flight. The Flight is to and from Asuncion, Paraguay. The other flights are 100% in Brazil covering mostly Sao Paulo, and Minas Gerais.
Santos Dumont Airport is among the 5 in Brazil in terms of number of people per year. It has a amount of people in the house of 7,000,000 per year. This number tends to increase drastically in the next few years because of the World Cup 2014, and the Olympic in 2016. In Fact, improvements in infrastructure have been approved by the Brazilian government to guarantee that passengers will have a good experience through this airport.
You will find ATMs, post office, that translated to Portuguese is called Correios the store is yellow, WI-FI Internet, and many public telephones. This airport is accessible for those with disabilities. However, it is wise for you, in case you need that, to inform your airline company, so they are prepared for you whenever you land or take off. There is a parking lot with about 1000 spots. One good portion is for disabilities purposes.
You will find lots of places to eat. You will also find stores to buy newspapers, books, souvenirs, and service stores as travel agencies, among others. You will find the main international car rentals there. They can be very pricy thought, if you can rent from the downtown area, you could find better deals.
Santos Dumont Airport also has a doctor’s office for emergency purposes. Since this is owned by the government, you will not pay anything in case you have to see the doctor inside of the airport’s facility. You will have to buy the drug only. Do not hesitate in case you need it.
It is pretty safe, however, you should not be too relaxed upon arrival in terms of petty crimes. It can definitely happen. In fact, you should, as soon as you land, go get your luggage to make sure you do not get robbed. If you do not find your luggage upon arrival, talk immediately with the airline company.
There is a Lost and Found place there. In case you lost anything you should look for them immediately. If they do not possess whatever you lost, you should leave your contact information. Your chances of getting it/them back is/are slim though.
Santos Dumont Airport is located near the downtown area. I believe to be somewhere around 2.8 km away from downtown. This can be an advantage because everything else is cheaper out of the airport.
Have fun coming to Rio de Janeiro, and be safe!
