Many Caribbean travelers were slammed with an unexpected twist to their vacation plans when the Ministry of Justice in St. Maarten announced changes to visa requirements for those intending to enter the country. The changes came into effect as of Monday, April 11, 2011, rendering many travelers who booked airfare or cruise arrangements without proper time to obtain the necessary paperwork.

The new regulations affect those of Guyanese and Jamaican nationality. Previously, these individuals were welcomed into St. Maarten without visa paperwork, but the Minister of Justice motioned to change the requirements, and was supported by the Council of Ministers.

Due to the volume of passengers affected by the new changes, Caribbean Airlines has offered to waive fees for changing flights for those who have booked tickets to St. Maarten but will not be able to secure their visas in time. In addition, they offered full refunds for vacationers unable to reschedule their visit to the island.

These new changes came at an inconvenient time for many people, who were planning travels to coincide with the Easter holiday and Carnival season. These individuals could not apply for their visas in time to make their intended travel dates.

Travelers from the United States will fortunately remain unaffected by these new changes. Additionally, those of Guyanan or Jamaican nationality who are legal residents of the United States may still travel to St. Maarten without applying visas.
