The deal: Key Holidays calls this package the “San Francisco Treat.” You get a round-trip train ticket from Los Angeles to San Francisco, three nights based on double occupancy at the Executive Hotel Vintage Court near Union Square, a Muni Pass good for unlimited rides on cable cars and streetcars, a lunch at Fior dItalia restaurant and a Pier 39 Fun Pack for discounts coupons at places in the city. The package also includes a continental breakfast each day from 7-9 a.m. and free wine samplings 5-6 p.m. daily at the hotel.

When: The package is available midweek and weekends through Dec. 14, except July 13-17, Aug. 5-7, Aug. 28-31, Sept. 18-23, Oct. 10-13 and Oct. 22-26. Key Holidays recommends booking at least two weeks in advance to allow time to receive your travel documents.

Fine print: You can take in sweeping views as the Coast Starlight, which runs between Los Angeles and Seattle daily, proceeds up the coast to Santa Barbara and then turns inland and heads up the Central Valley. It leaves L.A.’s Union Station at 10:15 a.m. Passengers leave the train at Emeryville and take an Amtrak bus into the city for the remainder of the journey. Same route for the return visit, so make sure to include a fourth full day of travel in your itinerary.

If you go to the website for the Bay Area’s Marine Mammal Center, you’ll find an up-to-date list of patients – including Squeezel the California sea lion or a Northern elephant seal named Lima Bean – being cared for at the working wildlife hospital, education and research center.

Those who want to visit the animals and learn more about the rescue operation can explore the $32-million center outfitted with glass walls and viewing platforms that reopened last June. It offers wide coastal views and access to nearby beaches from its location at the Marin Headlands within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Franciscos historic Huntington Hotel is up for sale

San Franciscos historic Huntington Hotel is up for sale

The historic, 12-story Huntington Hotel & Nob Hill Spa, which shares San Franciscos Nob Hill with the Fairmont, the Mark Hopkins and the Ritz-Carlton, is up for sale for the first time in its history, according to a May 6 release issued by the commercial real estate firm handling the sale. The sale also includes the hotel’s sister property, La Playa Hotel and Cottages-by-the-Sea in Carmel. The hotels are up for sale as assets of Nob Hill Properties Inc., which owns them and is being offered for sale.

The Huntington, at 1075 California Ave., bears the name of one of the early Big Four railroad barons of California. It was built in 1924 on the same promontory where C.P. Huntington and his cohorts built their mansions in the late 1800s.

The Huntington was operated as a luxury apartment building, according to the hotel’s website, until developer Eugene Fritz turned it into an elegant hotel in the mid 1940s, retaining the spacious size of the apartments for guest rooms. Its his grandchildren, owners of the Huntington and the Carmel site under the name Nob Hill Properties Inc., who are selling.

“These are generational hotels that have not been available to investors for more than 50 years,” Michael Leggett of the real estate firm Holiday Fenoglio Fowler said in the news release. “… The Huntington Hotel, constructed in 1924, has been significantly renovated throughout the years and has never been offered for sale.”

The Huntington has 136 guest rooms and suites, plus the Nob Hill Spa and Big 4 Restaurant. La Playa Hotel and Cottages-by-the-Sea is a historic resort just two blocks from the sea in Carmel.

In the World of Avatar filming

avatar movie poster 6

Another great movie today that is written and directed by James Cameron is Avatar; starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Stephen Lang. It is the most technologically advanced work of cinema ever undertaken

The movie brings us to the year 2154, the the era when human are mining valuable mineral in Pandora. The growth of the colony of mining endangered the Na’vi—a living humanoid species native to Pandora. James Cameron said in news conference that the scene in Avatar brings audiences the environmental message in an emotional way. It can be felt in especially in the scene where human cut down the beautiful glowing willow-like tree using the big industrialized machine, while the Na’vi Avatar” Jake Sully” watch in horror.

7 Best Pet-Friendly Hotels in the US

If you usually travel with your pets, youre probably on the lookout now for hotels that accommodate dogs and cats. This doesnt mean that you have to give up five-star services just to be with your furry friend. Why should you when you can have the best of both worlds? Below are the most animal-friendly five-star accommodations you should look into if youre planning a summer getaway with your cat or dog.

Top room service menu

7 Best Pet-Friendly Hotels in the US

When you stay at the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa, located in California, both you and your pet can enjoy the best meals you can ever ask for. While the list for human guests isnt bad, the pet menu is pretty impressive. These are, of course, exclusively for privileged guests, and you may want to keep earning those loyalty points if you want the best chow for your Chowchow.

The pets favorite in their menu is the Petite New York Stake. This is a generous slab of medium rare stake served with fresh, raw vegetables. Other varieties which are just as good include the half-pound cheeseburger, the mushroom ravioli (you can ask for the cream to be set aside), and the baked salmon.

This special pet room service is available from 7:00 AM to 2:00 AM. You can also take your pets to dine with you at the al fresco restaurants, although the areas are limited to certain patio areas of the inn.

Cutest Door Tag

7 Best Pet-Friendly Hotels in the US

How do you know if a hotel really welcomes pets? When it encourages you to travel with your pets, of course. Whether youre travelling with Fido or Fluffy, this hotel will always be close to your heart if only because their door tag spells “animal lover” . The Hotel Arista which lies just outside Chicago, is both trendy and eco-friendly. Their cute door tag will feature your very own pet.

How is this possible? Upon making your reservations, you can send a photograph of your pet. On the day of your stay, youll be welcomed warmly by a personalized door tag framing a photograph of your furry little buddy.

Yu Me Ya Sake House in Encinitas, California

“Japanese people NEVER drink hot sake.” I had no reason to doubt the authenticity of this statement, made by our waitress, Yuka Nakai, a daughter of the owner of the best sake joint in north San Diego county. Yu Me Ya is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it sake bar and restaurant on the 101; we did, until one day we didn’t. Our first visit, a few years back, was a crash course in the art of sake drinking. The glasses are served on a saucer, and filled to the point of overflow (it’s bad form to pick up the glass for the first sip; instead, lean over and sip it as it sits on the table – and make sure you drink what spilled into that saucer). There are hundreds of sake brewers in Japan, and they are no less serious about their varietals of rice than Napa Valley vintners are about their grapes. And after you’ve had a glass of good, cold sake, you’ll never want to drink it hot again.
