Petes Dueling Piano Bar at Town Square in Las Vegas

Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar

Petes Dueling Piano Bar at Town Square in Las Vegas

The “El Duelo” was great, but not $12.50 great.

The hype surrounding Pete’s Piano Bar was big. Now located in Town Square, a major shopping and entertainment hub just off the Las Vegas Strip, it’s become a local favorite with a fairly rabid Twitter fan base. Situated on a corner, one wall is left completely open on fair-weather days, allowing customers to enjoy some nice exterior lounge spaces while staying in clear earshot of the live music.

Because, in the end, that’s what folks come for – the dueling pianos. When we arrived, it was a one-man show. (I guess his musical duel was strictly internal.) He was jovial and clearly talented as he plinked his way through some popular standards and tunes I’ve never heard arranged for the ivories. Later on in the evening a true duo went head-to-head in a friendly exchange, shifting quickly between the Captain and Tenille’s “Love Will Keep us Together” and Van Halen’s “Jump.” They claim they play purely extemporaneously and their play list is purely request-driven. They’re only stipulation was the tunes should be fairly upbeat and drinking tunes are preferred. So, no “my wife left me, my dog died, I lost my job, and I want to die” songs, please. Well, unless the song has a punchline that involves a shot.

Musicians taunting a 21st birthday bash at the front table.

Have no fear, the main goal of this bar is to get you drunk and singing. The music is loud and it’s difficult to hold a conversation. You’ll probably have to head to the sidewalk to introduce yourself. This bar doesn’t make its money on small talk. It makes it’s money at the bar. That’s for sure. I had one of their signature drinks, the “El Duelo,” a tequila/agave-based concoction that was smooth and went down quickly, well, at least until I realized it was $12.50 a glass. Standard well drinks weren’t much better ($9.50 for a Jack and Diet Coke). If you’re planning to get really loose here, bring your cash or credit card and prepare for an expensive night. You may be able to save a few dollars by going to their website and texting them to get codes for a free drink and discounts off your tab. The manager is also happy to follow you back on Twitter and keep you abreast of all their specials and events.

All in all, this is a fun place to go to as a group. Pete’s was made for birthday parties and bachelor/bachelorette parties and other rowdy crowds. If you’re looking for a quiet piano bar, this isn’t it.

Las Vegas: Stay at Mandalay Bay and get a free airline ticket to come back

Las Vegas: Stay at Mandalay Bay and get a free airline ticket to come back

Does a visit to Las Vegas leave you wanting to come back for more? Mandalay Bay and its boutique TheHotel are offering a “Fly Back Free” deal that features 30% off room rates and a round-trip airline ticket good for a year.

Deal: “Fly Back Free” advertises room rates starting at $66 at Mandalay Bay and $86 at TheHotel. Guests who stay even one night get a round-trip airline ticket worth up to $350 to come back to Vegas. The ticket voucher is good for a year; on your return, you must stay at least two nights, based on double occupancy. Use the code PFLY10-P2 when booking online or by phone.

When: Now through Sept. 9, subject to availability.

Tested: When I searched both hotels online, I found the lowest room rate was available only on midweek nights Sept. 6 through 9, on Labor Day and right after. For Mandalay Bay, I found the $66 rate widely available on those days; with taxes and a $15 resort fee, the total came to $74. But if you want to cash in on the free airfare and don’t want to be restricted to the September dates, rates on other nights are still discounted, just not as deeply. For example, I found rooms at $140 per weekend night (June 11 and 12) and $90 per night midweek night (June 13 through 17) at Mandalay Bay that normally go for $204 and $132, respectively.

Here’s how the free airline ticket works: When you check in at the hotel, you get a voucher for an airline ticket worth up to $350 that you book through an agency, Archer Travel Group. You have to book 21 days in advance of your travel date; other restrictions may apply.

Wine Styles Las Vegas

How often do you get to walk into a store, sample the food and beverages and leave without feeling obliged to buy anything? Hmmm, well there’s Costco on any given Saturday. And, I suppose you can get a decent meal canvassing the aisles of your local Whole Foods or farmer’s market.

Well, let me try to put it this way: How often can you hang out in a store for an hour or two and possibly need a taxi to get home? Ah, there’s the ticket. And it’s for the weekly tastings at your local Wine Styles shop (the one in Vegas is a distance from The Strip off Flamingo and the Beltway)Wine Styles Las Vegas.
