New York: Whitney Museum to stay open ‘24/7′ for three days

New York: Whitney Museum to stay open ‘24/7′ for three days

Staying up all night is practically a Manhattan birthright, and Michael Asher now elevates it to art.

Asher, one of 55 artists in the 2010 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, proffered this as his submission: Keep the museum open 24/7 for a week during the Biennial. Thats it, no accompanying multimedia, video or performance art piece, just “Open All Day and Night.”

“Its just his concept of what the world would be like if museums were open all the time,” said museum spokesman Graham Newhall.

Citing budget and staff shortages, officials said they couldnt comply with the request for an entire week. But they will keep the Whitney open round-the-clock for three days, starting at midnight Wednesday (that is, 12:01 a.m. Wednesday) and ending at 11:59 p.m. Friday (all times local to New York).

During this period, the entire museum, not just the Biennial, which is in its 75th year and closes May 30, will be open to the public. A companion show, “Collecting Biennials,” on the fourth floor includes works from artists who have been part of the Whitney’s exhibition over the last eight decades. “Collecting Biennials” runs through November.

So what’s there to do all night? Artist Aki Sasamoto will perform at 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Wednesday (and also at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.) as part of her artwork “Strange Attractors” that features “sculpturally altered found objects” augmented by her improvisations. There will also be daily tours – some in the wee hours – of both Biennial shows.

Admission will be “pay what you wish” during much of the “Open All Day and Night” event; the museum website lists the schedule. Regular admission is $18 for adults; $12 for students and seniors; and free for those younger than 18).

Seven of the Cheapest Places in the US to Live

With the economy the way that it is today many individuals are looking for ways to save money and coming up with some pretty creative ideas. Everything from cutting back to cutting down to looking for deals has been thought of and tried in order to save some money. Some individuals even relocate to cities that have a lower cost of living so that they can live the way that they are used to but spend less money doing so. Many individuals assume that the cost of living is high everywhere but this is hardly the truth. There are a number of areas that have continued to stay steady regarding the costs of the things that we need the most. Some cities continue to have a competitive real estate market, low cost necessities, and lower taxes than other areas of the United States. Listed are seven of the many cheaper places in the US to live in no particular order, just in case you are thinking about relocating in order to keep the standard of living that you are used to even when it seems as if it is impossible.

@ hometips.com

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – Although you may not think that you can live for cheaper in a big city Pittsburgh is actually a highly competitive when it comes to cheaper cities to live in. Although the unemployment rate is considerably high the cheaper cost of living tends to make up for it.

The Point Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

Fort Collins, Colorado – This is an area with about half the unemployment rate of Pittsburgh with similar cost of living averages. Many cities in Colorado continue to grow because they can compete with many other cities in this manner.

Downtown Fort Collins Colorado (@ wikipedia.org)

Albany, New York – This is another bigger city with a significantly low cost of living. Because of its size and the fact that it is a capital city you get a lot of bang for your buck here.

Zumanity at New York New York in Las Vegas

If you’re looking for a risque night out in Vegas, get a sexy dress and a pair of tickets for Cirque du Soleil’s production of Zumanity at the New York New York.

Zumanity at New York New York in Las VegasAs with any Cirque show, you are greeted by a host of costumed quirkiness who keep you amused while you await the start of the official show. These greeters are of a far racier variety, so don’t be surprised if you our your amour are flirted with, sat upon, fondled, or groped.

Once the show officially starts, sit back and take it in. It’s quite the visual buffet for every sexual appetite under the sun. Now, don’t get me wrong, the show is not pornographic. All of the performances are tasteful and artistic by most tastes. On the other hand, if you are uncomfortable by these racy themes, you’ll want to pick a more family friendly show like Ka or Love.

Compared to its sister shows, Zumanity has much more dance and drama and less aerials and acrobatics. The themes oscillate quickly from the bawdy to the steamy and back again. I loved how the producers celebrated all kinds of love and affection and chose to illustrate it with a spectrum of body types and sexual orientations. Love and passion are global themes and should be celebrated with such fervor far more often.

AirTrans one-day sale to 50 destinations from Los Angeles

AirTran Airways is having a one-day sale with one-way fares as low as $44 (plus taxes and fees). You have to book Friday for travel by June 16.

Deal: The super-low fares on this deal feature East Coast destinations: Boston to Baltimore ($49) and Nassau, Bahamas to Orlando ($44). From Los Angeles, one-way sale fares for 50 destinations are in the $104-to-$179 range, including $104 for Washington, New York and Boston; $166 for San Juan, Puerto Rico; and $124 for Atlanta. You have to travel Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays to get the lowest prices.

When: Purchase tickets by 8:59 PDT May 7 and complete your travel by June 16. Tickets must be bought seven days in advance of travel; blackout days are May 28 and 31 (Memorial Day weekend).

Tested: I tried various date combinations from Los Angeles to New York but couldn’t always get the $104 rate both ways. For example, leaving Wednesday, June 2, the lowest fare I could find was $129, though I could get the $104 rate to return on Saturday, June 5. As I tested various dates between L.A. and New York, the $129 rate showed wider availability than the rock-bottom $104, but that may be because seats are going fast.
