Lake Tahoe: New mountainside Ritz-Carlton reopens after spring break

Lake Tahoe: New mountainside Ritz-Carlton reopens after spring break

The Ritz-Carlton Highlands at Lake Tahoe is back from its own spring break. The tony ski-in, ski-out hotel, which opened on the slopes of the Northstar-at-Tahoe resort in December, was shuttered April 19 to get ready for its first summer season.

The hotel, along with its signature Manzanita restaurant and spa, reopened May 10 for spring and summer guests who have stowed the skis and are ready to hike the nearby Tahoe Rim Trail, go fly-fishing at the Truckee River or take a boat ride on Lake Tahoe. Or guests can just enjoy the 17,000-square-foot spa and fitness center or play a round of golf at two nearby courses.

If you think you might want to sample the luxe life, room rates in summer start at $399 per night for a Resort Reconnect package, which includes a room, breakfast for two and a $100 resort credit per night.  (Note that these rates dont include taxes, a $25-per-night resort fee and $30-per-night parking fee.)

The hotel made the news last month after Bank of America filed an $18.6-million default notice against the sites owners, East West Partners, according to a Wall Street Journal blog item and other media reports. Stephen Holt, director of public relations for the resort, said the Ritz-Carlton will continue to operate the site no matter who owns it and that the spring closure was unrelated to any of the owners’ financial problems.

San Franciscos historic Huntington Hotel is up for sale

San Franciscos historic Huntington Hotel is up for sale

The historic, 12-story Huntington Hotel & Nob Hill Spa, which shares San Franciscos Nob Hill with the Fairmont, the Mark Hopkins and the Ritz-Carlton, is up for sale for the first time in its history, according to a May 6 release issued by the commercial real estate firm handling the sale. The sale also includes the hotel’s sister property, La Playa Hotel and Cottages-by-the-Sea in Carmel. The hotels are up for sale as assets of Nob Hill Properties Inc., which owns them and is being offered for sale.

The Huntington, at 1075 California Ave., bears the name of one of the early Big Four railroad barons of California. It was built in 1924 on the same promontory where C.P. Huntington and his cohorts built their mansions in the late 1800s.

The Huntington was operated as a luxury apartment building, according to the hotel’s website, until developer Eugene Fritz turned it into an elegant hotel in the mid 1940s, retaining the spacious size of the apartments for guest rooms. Its his grandchildren, owners of the Huntington and the Carmel site under the name Nob Hill Properties Inc., who are selling.

“These are generational hotels that have not been available to investors for more than 50 years,” Michael Leggett of the real estate firm Holiday Fenoglio Fowler said in the news release. “… The Huntington Hotel, constructed in 1924, has been significantly renovated throughout the years and has never been offered for sale.”

The Huntington has 136 guest rooms and suites, plus the Nob Hill Spa and Big 4 Restaurant. La Playa Hotel and Cottages-by-the-Sea is a historic resort just two blocks from the sea in Carmel.
